1. How are students encouraged to participate in community welfare programs? Are there any dedicated clubs or organizations to focus on social work? In our institution we believe in overall development of students wherein community engagement activities play a key role. Apart from their academics, both students and faculty are encouraged to volunteer and participate actively in community welfare programs. Our women development cell hosted a menstrual hygiene day with renowned gynaecologist who shared valuable insights into menstrual health and hygiene. In support to this, sanitary pads were distributed to 100 participants.
Environment day was celebrated wherein students joined hands to make a difference by adopting plants by committing to nurture them. In association with Bengaluru police, we celebrated International Drug Abuse Day by hosting an event to combat illicit trafficking and create awareness about drug-free future. Department of Social Work, conducted a seven -day rural camp at Ganagalur village. It was a comprehensive social work initiative aimed at improving community health, education and well-being. Apart from these, we also conduct many health check up drivers as part of our health club in association with Rotary like organizations. | | | | 2. How can sports help in promoting volunteering & social welfare. What initiatives are students part of? Sports can serve as a powerful tool to promote volunteering and community engagement in many ways. It helps in fostering a sense of community inclusive participation bringing in people from different backgrounds together. It also helps in encouraging volunteerism through event organization. Some other advantages include, skill development, youth engagement, good health and well-being, charity matches, cultural exchange, raising awareness, strengthening relationships, teamwork and integrity. Students also celebrated health week featuring yoga, zumba, marathon, nutritional cooking competition and a bootcamp promoting balanced lifestyle. | | Learning Bytes A New Year, A New Resolution: Why Not Volunteering?
The start of a new year often comes with resolutions—promises to ourselves to grow, improve, and make a difference. So, why not let volunteering take a place on this list? Volunteering not only benefits the community but also enriches us with experiences, skills, and a sense of purpose. It is an opportunity to connect, contribute, and create lasting change.
Here goes a small story which echoes this thought. In the heart of a small village stood a majestic tree, known to all as the "Speaking Tree." Villagers often gathered under its shade to reflect on life or seek wisdom. The tree, ancient and steady, had become a symbol of giving—providing shade, fruits, and a home for birds, all without asking for anything in return.
One crisp New Year’s morning, a young boy sat beneath the tree, deep in thought. “I want to do something meaningful this year,” he muttered, “but I don’t know where to begin.”
The Speaking Tree rustled its leaves gently, as if preparing to speak. “Look at me,” the tree began, “I have stood here for years, quietly offering whatever I can—shade to the weary, fruit to the hungry, and branches for the birds. I didn’t wait for the perfect moment; I just began. Small acts of giving can grow into something much larger.”
The boy frowned slightly. “But how do I start? And why now?”
The tree whispered, “While we can begin anytime, the New Year carries its own magic. It’s like a fresh page waiting to be written upon—a perfect moment to make a resolution to do good. Why not let this year be the start of your journey of giving? Begin small, and let your actions take root. The path will become clearer as you walk.” Feeling inspired, the boy decided to dedicate his New Year to acts of kindness, starting with simple gestures like helping neighbors, teaching younger children, and planting seeds. Slowly, his efforts blossomed into something greater than he imagined, leaving a lasting impact on his community.
Just as the Speaking Tree advises, while there’s no wrong time to begin doing good, the New Year offers a symbolic and inspiring starting point. This year, let us resolve to take that first step into volunteering and make it a priority—a resolution that not only transforms us but also the world around us.
Many students have shared their desire to begin their journey of volunteering but are unsure about when and where to start. While it’s true that doing good doesn’t need a specific date or occasion, the new year offers the perfect moment—a fresh page—to take that first step. It serves as a gentle reminder that we can begin anew, with a resolution to give back to society.
As we reflect on our past actions and deeds, the new year encourages us to prioritize meaningful endeavors like volunteering. Let’s embrace this as an opportunity to make volunteering not just a resolution, but a lifelong habit, starting today.
