The most recent meeting held on 15 August in Rustenburg, and themed "Lack of Accountability," marked the 12th anniversary of the Marikana Massacre. Despite a long and expensive commission of inquiry to look into the causes of the massacre and the social conditions in the mining villages, justice has been thin on the ground, and living conditions have deteriorated.

All of the meetings we have held so far have amplified the urgent need for coalition-building among all arms of civil society, including community-based organisations, trade unions and legal NGOs, to bring whatever we have to demand accountable governance, and justice where there has been wrongdoing. We need transparent processes over public procurement, so that public funds are geared towards the social good, and not private greed.
